still figuring dreamwidth out, but 2019 wrap up!
2019: Fic Year in Review
The Stats:
Total Word Count: roughly 80k, though I'll probably get in a little more before 2019 is over because of haggly
Total Fics Written: 13
Fandoms Written In: khr, seventeen, nct
Overall Thoughts:
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?
I wrote way more than I intended to this year! Honestly I'm pretty proud of writing as much as I did. Kpop did great things for my wc, being able to find a community of writers really bumped up my motivation this year. Approximately 50k of that 80k is just kpop fic.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Honestly kpop in general... My home is animanga fic and I fell into kpop completely by accident this year.
What’s your own favourite story of the year?
It's a tie between my two completed longfics, both--unsurprisingly--about lesbians and discovery of a sort. I'm trying to keep my two accounts separate, but here's one of them: here.
Did you take any writing risks this year?
I wrote about women..... this is only partially a joke. Writing something closer to home has been an exercise in inching sidelong towards my own id, trying not to spook myself out of it. Don't look too closely at the issues behind the curtain etc etc. Also have/hold was a lot of projection, which is the same kind of risk I think.
Do you have any fanfic goals for the new year?
I'd like to either finish dove on fire or start snow plums. Really the idea would be to finish my fic fests and then write jaeger lesbians, the latest in a string of things that have absolutely possessed me.
From my past year of writing, what was…
My best story of this year:
I think an absence of green was my best work this year! It has some serious rough patches (coming from writing half of it at like 1am) but I love the themes in it.
My most popular story of this year:
By kudos it's not this one, but dove on fire has the most engagement! Thank you nctficdom for your enthusiasm. I think the fact that it's unfinished longfic is influential here.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I'm not really too worried about it, but an absence of green is definitely one of my best works and it's probably never going to be as popular as any of my other stuff. I didn't really write it with that expectation though, so I'm pretty chill with it.
Most fun story to write:
last dance! This was just something that had been bugging me for a couple of weeks, and it was so nice to be able to just bang it all out in an evening. It was the first story this year I've been pretty sure worked the way I wanted it to, as well.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Honestly I'm not sure anything I wrote this year was all that sexy. Maybe the one scene from an absence of green? It mostly fades to black, though.
Most “holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you” story:
Oh it's rue this kindness... Sometimes I wonder what the hell possessed me to make that my introduction to the svt tag, seriously. Having vague thoughts about a sequel which would probably mark the weirdest thing I'd write in 2020.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
This was definitely set down your edges. This story feels kind of undone around the seams, but I think it really made me consider Jeonghan, who is a person I seriously don't get. I think I get him a little better now, but I had to kind of sidestep into that understanding, and I'm not sure I could verbalize it very well, even now.
Hardest story to write:
I think no other stars really was like trying to find a lost cat in forest full of fog. It was a concept that came to me half formed and I had to constantly reel it in from mirroring other stories (the darling electric, specifically). I'm still not entirely satisfied with it, and I don't think it really hit the themes I wanted it to. In the future... a better bday fic is in my writing wheelhouse... seeding it now!!
Biggest disappointment:
While I think no other stars was the story that came out the most haphazard, have/hold is my biggest disappointment, and I think it's because those themes are really too close to my chest to come out entirely whole on the other end of writing. Something to consider in 2020 maybe.
Biggest surprise:
summer in the air! This story was the reason I needed an hvt extension. I am so embarrassed about that, are you kidding? I needed to write 2k of coming home fluff and that's why an absence of green got delayed? Apologies to the hvt mods, seriously. I'm being a lot better about my fest fics this year though, not waiting for 2020 to fix my problems with scheduling; haggly is thanking me for it.
Most unintentionally telling story:
I feel like a broken record by now but an absence of green was not really something I expected to grow as much as it did. Have/hold is probably more telling, but that was mostly intentional.
Favourite Opening Lines:
"It’s eight o’clock, which means it’s time for Minghao to come and rip out his liver again. This, unfortunately, is not a metaphor."
—rue this kindness
Favourite Closing Lines:
"“I can’t call it regret. Not when it’s you.” With that, Minghao untangles their fingers and pushes Seokmin towards the edge of the crowd where Jeonghan is waiting with drinks. “I hope you have a good night Seokmin.”
And for the second time in her life, Seokmin walks away."
—last dance
Favourite lines from anywhere:
Being indulgent and picking from a couple places:
"Jeonghan. It's me." Joshua says the words carefully, noting how Jeonghan swallows reflexively, hand clenched around the dagger. The name is familiar in Joshua’s mouth, said a thousand times: over battlefields, between fits of laughter, in prayer. It feels no different here. "What's wrong?"
“What are you doing here?” Jeonghan asks in return. His eyes are a whetstone darkness, and without the firelight, he looks hollowed out, a riverbed without water.
—set down your edges
and
"Junhui rocks back on his heels. Mingyu gets the feeling that he’s seen something else in their interactions, entirely outside of what he’s said out loud, and has chosen not to comment. Kindness and perception, two halves of an uncalculated reflex. “I’ve been good.” He flashes a smile. “A community theater program started up in town recently, they were more than happy to have someone as handsome as I am in it.”"
—summer in the air
and
"“It’s how I get the ghosts back to the house in the first place, right? So it’s simple. Let it possess me, trap it in the house, wait for the power to turn back on and eat more Japchae. Simple.”
“And what do I do in this plan of yours?”
Soonyoung considers it for as second, and scatters more salt on the floor. “You don’t die.”"
—no other stars
Fic-writing goals for 2020:
I’d love to finish editing “you will never be a god” which is my monstrous 21k child who needs pruning. I also want to finish some longer fic, or at least start it! (Again: finish dove on fire, start snow plums) I also want to write some more nct fic.
As to writing goals, I’d really love to focus on a tighter narrative, and figuring out pacing! Just being able to finish more things though, would be good. I'd also like to work on more original fic!
