13 songs playlist commentary

Modeled after [personal profile] capricornia's post, here's a little bit of commentary on my 13 songs playlist!

The concept was based off the thing that idols have been doing recently--specifically seventeen but maybe others are doing it as well--where they put out a playlist of songs they like. Nikki started a meme on twitter about doing your own version, and here's mine.

I wouldn't consider it ~representatively of me~ or anything, but I do love all the songs on here!

Téléphone Sonne by Lous and the Yakuza

Quick disclaimer on this one that I don't speak French! This is a song off Gore, an album I initially heard through a playlist of Hyb's. I didn't go looking for the rest of the album until someone linked me to this mv which is both gorgeous and really catchy. Funnily enough, I didn't realize it was the same artist on both and spent ten minutes wondering where I had heard Dilemme before (hyb's playlist, obviously).

I put this song on here because I really love this whole album, even though I can't understand it? The sounds are just really nice, and it's from an album that's been on my monthly playlist this month.

Factories by Autoheart

What can I say about this song! I think I found it after listening through autoheart's discography, and while it didn't immediately make its way into my favorites, it's now my top played spotify song of all time, so. There's that.

There are a couple things about this song that make me love it! Top on that list is the repeatability (is that a word T_T) of it; I've looped this song for hours before. The whole thing is like, sonically consistent? and the little glockenspiel bits in the background are my favorite. I think the lead singer's voice is really nice too, like a soft purple-blue. The lyrics vary between devastating (to me!) Will you and I ever feel brand new? to kind of nonsensical And all I remember is the face of November / Walking hand and hand with you and me . Ultimately it builds to a really satisfying conclusion and the layering of the voices is just good (to me!!).

I'm never sure how much this song will get other people, but if it was going to be a playlist of songs I like, Factories had to be on it.

You picked me up and took me home / You scrubbed away the bloodstain on the carpet

Froot by Marina

This is the title track off of Marina's album Froot. It's just really catchy and makes me happy! I can sing along to it in the shower. Froo-oo-oo-oot Lalalalalala

I've been saving all my summers for you

A Harp in New York - Live by Hiromi and Edmar Castañeda

This album just makes me so happy!!! I used to play jazz before, but never like this. I can't remember where I found this album but I'm so glad I did. It's a jazz duet between harp and piano and just, the sheer joy in their playing makes me smile, always. This whole album is a conversation, and I chose this song kind of at random from it since I love the whole thing.

The live version of Fire is stunning too; if they ever perform live again together, I want to be there.

Wild Heart by Mumford and Sons

My not so secret Mumford and Sons weakness u_u Too much time spent listening to 8tracks mixes while I was 15 I think--King and Lionheart will forever Get Me. This song in particular is a case of lyrics hitting me over the head. I've looped it recently, and it also made its way onto my October playlist.

I wouldn't have you any other way / Who wants love that makes sense anyway?

Pretty U by Seventeen

Musical theatre svts!!! This is one of my favorite svt songs, I think the serotonin from this and Adore U are just unparalleled. I love the little clicks/snaps in the mix, the really singable melody line, and the breakdown in the middle with the weird synth in the background; it's just a song that makes me smile!!!! The choreo is really fun too! Instant serotonin every time <3

Le missile suit sa lancée by Keny Arkana

Once again there is french rap on this playlist! This is partially Nikki's influence (I think I got introduced to Keny Arkana through her) and partially Len and Hyb--they were linking a bunch of French rap recently, and fortunately or not I've gotten into it.

This is once again a case of I don't speak French but I love the sound of Keny Arkana's voice. This song is one of the first ones I think about when I think of her, so it's the one I put on this playlist!

Welly Boots by The Amazing Devil

Now this is a song that tells a story! I think it was intended to be more parent-child, but I've always interpreted it as a mentor singing to their apprentice, But you are screaming far too loud to hear me swear / Just because I left doesn't mean that I'm not still there.

The push and pull in this song is really nice, and I really like the way they play with texture! The narrator's voice is really good to listen to too. The story I hear in it has to do with ghosts and will, eventually and hopefully, become a longfic next year!

Grow young each time that thunder in / Your lungs begins to rumble at the world

Play by Jolin Tsai

Yeah!! Yeah!!! I first heard this song through qcyn2 during this stage. I watched it so many times; An Qi is really killer. I looked up the song later and still loved it. Jolin Tsai is such a great performer, I'm sad I didn't know more about her when she was mentoring for the last season of qcyn! This is also another case of a song making it onto my monthly playlist.

Later, after Play had cemented itself in my mind as a great song, hwa would link me to this song of hers, which made me cry real tears!!! Still not over that T_T Ty Jolin Tsai for everything.

Stars by Ēriks Ešenvalds

This is a choral song! It's really beautiful, one of those things that you should hear live if you ever have the chance. I've sung it before, which is why it's on this list. I don't have much to say about it. The breathless feeling that I get singing with a good choir, where you pull all the air from the room? This is one of the best songs I've sung to represent that.

This is also one of those songs that the text doesn't mean as much as how it's sung. Fun fact, that high ringing noise is tuned wine glasses! You wet a finger and run it along the rim of a half filled glass to produce a pitch, it's a gorgeous effect.

And a heaven full of stars

Sucker Punch by Sigrid

It's fun and funky! What more could I want from a song! No really, there's fun sound effects in the background, the chorus is singable, and the bass is fun to listen to!! I've repeated fun three times already in this paragraph, but it's true, that's what characterizes this song the most in my ears, it's just fun to listen to. The lyrics aren't really complicated, but do they need to be?

It hit me like a sucker punch / Just one look and I'm out of touch

Habibi by Tamino

Tamino!! If I could sound like him, all would be right with the world.

I remember how I discovered him actually, it was through a Tiny Desk concert! I was soooo stunned by his vocals that I looked up the rest of his album after. Back to his voice again--he pulls off longing so well!! Just a song that is satisfying to listen to. The texture is pretty simple, and so good at evoking yearning.

If only I'd forget you after one last dance / But you're everywhere, yes you are / In every melody and in every little scar

Make Me Feel by Janelle Monáe

I really loved Janelle Monáe's album when it came out, but it's only recently that I've been looping individual tracks. This one has really fun background sounds, and her voice is so lovely. I really love the interjections in the second half and the way she controls pauses throughout, it's such a good song to listen to!!!

Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better / There's nothin' better

This list doesn't cover my whole music taste of course (particularly missing some emo or metal, "noise music", classical, and some gg music, etc etc to round it out) but it's certainly a contender for what I would put on a play list if I were an idol.

Ohhh, I loved reading this !! Seriously, reading about the Thought Processes that went on behind people's choices (whether they're big or as simple as putting some songs on a playlist) is one of my favorite things. It's so cool that I can just. read your thoughts?? now that you have written them?? Wow.

Also--"Welly Boots" being written about a parent/child dynamic honestly NEVER occurred to me. I really was like "wow how'd they get away with writing a song with such delicious dynamics" the whole time I've been listening to it, which has been several months now. Wow. (Thank you for introducing me to it!! I was listening to your playlist the other day while I was cooking for Shabbos and had forgotten what was on there, and I literally stopped in the hallway like "EM!")
