* Interview with Sue Chan, the production designer:

https://filmstories.co.uk/news/murderbot-designing-a-future-world-that-doesnt-look-like-alien/

“I started out by taking the most ancient societies on each continent – Etruscans, Asian, European, and African cultures,” Chan tells us. “I looked at the most fundamental motifs and gathered them into a bible, then asked my team to imagine 100 generations from now, when the diaspora of Earth have chosen to live together in society. How would they evolve a unified set of symbols? A language that really honours where they came from.”

This informed the alphabet that can be seen in the decoration painted across the otherwise grey, corporate habitat the PresAux crew are leasing. At the same time, acknowledging how much of the crew is queer and polyamorous, the colours of the rainbow are also entwined into their decorations.

“All of that is mashed up but it has a fundamental logic to it,” says Chan.

* Interview with Akshay Khanna (Ratthi):

https://squaremile.com/style/akshay-khanna-murderbot-actor-interview/

I’m incredibly excited for people to watch Murderbot on Apple TV+. Sci-fi has been my favourite genre by a country mile forever, and being on a show like this has always been a career goal of mine. Frankly, I had too much fun filming that show, and getting paid to do it constantly felt like I was getting away with something on set.

And the show is just so good. I can confidently say it’s fantastic – and if you don’t like it, then I would gently tell you that it’s OK to be wrong sometimes.

* Interview with Sabrina Wu (Pin-Lee):

https://www.autostraddle.com/sabrina-wu-interview-murderbot/

And then once I got the role, I read the books and I was legit just blown away at how funny the books were. I just haven’t seen such a dry sarcastic sensibility with this kind of hero sci-fi stories. And then I also just really liked that it was in the tradition of I felt like Octavia Butler, where it’s like, “oh, this is a queer imagining of the future.” So I don’t know. I just thought it was a really sweet, funny, different world. I also, obviously every comedian who becomes an actor, their dream is to get to work on something with action to move beyond an It’s Always Sunny kind of comedy. I believe there was already an opportunity for me to be in a spaceship and shoot guns, and it just made me happy that it was genuinely funny source material.

NMIXX (8 June, Hordern Pavilion)

After performing in Sydney a couple of years ago, on a festival line up with The Boyz and Infinite, it was great to see NMIXX back again for a full concert - this time including a show in Melbourne, Lily's hometown. For this show at the Hordern, it was full though not totally sold out on this cold winter's night. On entry we were handed some freebies: an official poster and pc (I got Jiwoo), and a fan freebie with a bracelet.

The theme of the show was a science lab, which resulted in some utterly dorky and silly VCRs with the girls mixing up potions with themes such as "love" "rockstar" and "alpha" and drinking them because of an impending bomb or something. It made nil sense!

The show was a lot of fun, they are enjoyable performers and they have some great songs. Lily was so cute, Haewon charmed me (my concert bias!), they all had their moments on stage. The momentum of the show ebbed and flowed somewhat, partly due to an extended games ment, so the pacing could have been tightened up; and I do wish there were more recent songs.

Some moments:
  • Lily said she cracked up during one song because Haewon made a silly face at her; and Haewon said she thought she was being cool.
  • Lily taught Haewon to say "prawns on the barbie"
  • The relay drawing game went on way too long. They did six drawings! SIX! That said it did have some cute moments:
    - Lily guessing kangaroo: "So easy! Well there is the other one but you wouldn't know that" (she meant wallaby). Bae was quite good at drawing.
    - They collectively drew the worst Sydney opera house good lord but it was cute that they tried to get everyone to sing opera
    - The word to guess was 'lawyer'. A mess. An audience member drew a picture for Sullyoon. Chaos
  • For their cover, they did NCT's Kick It.
  • At one point Haewon and Lily sang a bit from 4 Non-Blondes.
  • Lily: we're 50 and you're 50 and you gave 100 so together we're 150 yay maths!
  • When it was encore time, they walked around in the crowd which was a bad idea in this venue - there's no barriers between any sections, so people were leaving their seats on the floor and in the stands to rush over to them, it was total chaos. Do not recommend.
  • In the encore they did cover of 5 Seconds to Summer's She Looks So Perfect which Lily said was an iconic Australian song for her generation lol.
  • Lily got her Swiftie fanchant moment by getting the crowd to shout "Sydney!" ala Blank Space.
  • Men were yelling at Sullyoon during her ment; she was like okay thanks…
  • For Break the Wall they said wave your lightsticks, any lightstick is fine! They spotted a candybong in the crowd.
  • For the finale they did neverending Home.
  • A few Aussie phrases they left the stage with: you ripper, crikey, and of course Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi.

Ampers&one - Kick Start
Had to include this because they went FULL catboy.

ifeye - Nerdy
Loved the dreamy pop vibes.

VVS - Tea
It's a 5 girl assassin squad! Action movie level violence.

BEAST (Highlight) - Chains
Cool to see them back and this is a solid song.

MEOVV - Hands Up
Their solid run of tracks continues.

Astro - Moon
Astro with various friends of Moonbin... This is not my type of song but given the context, I did start crying while watching this. So.

Another belated theatre wrap-up - more positive than the last one!

I saw a couple of Bell Shakespeare productions. Their Henry V was a straightforward take, staged as a contemporary international conflict in military fatigues. The play was compressed down to 1 hour 50 minutes but felt complete. As the war enters St Crispin's Day, the stage is covered in a black mud that stains all the cast members and made the floor seem so slippery I was worried for their safety. The tone of this production dwells on the horror of war, and the ending with Katharine accepting her fate to marry Henry feels quite a downer. I liked the play overall, though not everything worked. For example I think the choice for JK Kazzi as Henry to play the St Crispin's Day speech as very casual and light didn't work - especially because earlier in the play he really did deliver a big war speech, so he's capable. I remember, from a previous Henry V, finding the speech so moving, so rousing - it felt like an anticlimax to see it delivered so casually in this one.

Next was Bell's King John - not conventionally staged but one of their 'play in a day' series with the director and cast rehearsing for just one day, and then reading without costumes or props, scripts in hand. In a fun twist, the cast and director were actually the Henry V team I'd just seen, on a brief break! They did have one addition to the cast, an actress playing King John, but otherwise it was the same. This is a rare play I'm unlikely to see performed elsewhere, though I did read it earlier this year. On seeing it live, the play makes more sense to me in some ways: the comedy comes out better, some of the drama too, and the director's introduction of the play as one about "mediocre men" rings true. Everyone is just a venal politician, without any goal except grabbing power and opportunity, so it does feel very contemporary in that way. A few things didn't work for me: the Bastard was cleverer on page than in this staging, and playing the death of a child for laughs felt too flippant. A play with some very interesting scenes and roles, but doesn't stick much in my mind - it really peters out at the end.

Before King John, the company director came out to give an intro and thank their sponsors. He gave some interesting background: the play in a day is a pet project of a couple of their major individual donors and it's not a profitable venture. At the first play in a day staging, there were around 35 people in the audience, and the donor picked up the costs. For King John there were 240 in the audience and this was almost enough to break even for the costs of cast, crew, etc.

A classic of a different kind: Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None at the Theatre Royal. I love the book, for all its problems, it's such a fun puzzle box. This was a very by the book staging, played pretty much completely straight, feeling rather dated as a result - but it's still an entertaining story to the end. Notably only one murder happens before interval. After that the deaths come thick and fast!

Last week I went to the Belvoir St Theatre for The Wrong Gods. Set in a small village in India, a girl clashes with her mother - the girl wants to leave and continue her education, her mother wants her to stay and continue their way of life by the river. Seven years pass and the girl returns, this time representing a large company that wants to dam the river, displacing the village's inhabitants. I wanted to like this, a play from Indian-Australians, starring four women, about mothers and daughters, environmental concerns, and self-determination. But I was honestly so bored, even at just 90 minutes. The first half is okay, the second half is just the four characters shouting at each other didactically.

Finally I saw Dangerous Liaisons at New Theatre. The Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont engage in a battle of wits, using and manipulating others with sex and power for their own pleasure and amusement. I've seen several versions of this story, including a 2012 production of the Christopher Hampton play, with Pamela Rabe and Hugo Weaving as the leads. This version is based on a different adaptation by Deborah Mulhall, but the script doesn't differ substantially from the Hampton version in my view. This particular production was, in terms of quality, rather inconsistent. Some of the actors were quite good, others were just quite bad. The costumes were fine, deliberately anachronistic with nods to the past. The set design was ok, the lighting and sound were occasionally confused. The musical/dance interludes were a bit cringe - one was set to Nine Inch Nail's Closer, to give you an idea. However: I was entertained. It was an imperfect entertainment but the script and story were strong enough, and the actors and crew earnest and hard working enough, that there was enough interest and effort there to stay to the end.

Five minutes before the play ended, it came to an abrupt pause - there was apparently a noise complaint and the cops got called! After a few minutes of stoppage (Valmont getting up and dusting himself off from his death scene) the play resumed (Valmont lying down again) and shortly concluded. Quite a memorable ending.

EVNNE (18 May, Liberty Hall)

It was an absolutely pouring cats and dogs, windy cold rainy night, and the venue wasn't the easiest to get to - so I'm glad this show was enjoyable. EVNNE were very charming and funny, lots of banter, and they had fun stages, starting from some of their harder songs, then some sunnier and poppier ones in the middle and later. The racing-themed VCRs weren't that exciting but tbh I wasn't expecting them to even have VCRs so that was fine!

They had three unit stages: a rap stage with Keita and Jihoo; Hanbin, Junghyun and Jeonghyeon did a performance/dance stage; and Seungeon and Yunseo had a vocal stage. For their covers medley, they performed Enhypen's Sweet Venom, NCT 127's Walk, and Seventeen's Pretty U.

I didn't know the members going in, and could only recognise Hanbin. I can see why he's the centre and why he came so close to making ZB1 - he's charismatic and has star quality. Keita as the tiny leader was very charming and full of jokes, he made me laugh. I found it quite funny/cute that Jihoo (the maknae) was very wide-eyed boy through the whole show except when he was wearing a cap and rapping, when he became all swag. All of them had good banter and interactions with each other.

For the encore, they did the expected 3 songs, but then they stuck around to do another 3 songs, repeats of songs they had done earlier (Crown, Trouble, and one other I forget - Role Model I think). So I'm going to take that as they liked us, they really liked us…

What I did not realise was that every ticket had send-off, so at the end of the show we attempted to make our way out - only to be BLOCKED by a staff member who was adamant that none of us could leave before send-off. I had an early start the next day and the show was already running longer than I expected so I would've loved to go home! Instead I got a 10 second wave goodbye to them while the staff hustled us out the door lol. It was very funny!

Some random notes:

  • One of the members complimented the coffee (ah he knows how to flatter Australians) and the weather (I do hope he meant Saturday because that Sunday, as mentioned, was DISMAL).
  • One of the members mentioned Keita getting lazier with the choreo. Keita: "yes because I'm tired!"
  • They did sexy ments, very cringey, with Seungeon pretending to show his abs. He said "Come back in two years" to see the real thing lol. Other member reactions to sexy ments time: "I don't even know why you guys like this" and "I want to go home."
  • For encore, Hanbin came out wearing a koala headband - cute.
  • A couple of members said "thanks heaps" and they did "Aussie Aussie Aussie" a couple of times lol.
  • Surprisingly a lot of talk about coming back again to Australia.
