So July! My entire month was pretty much just school and I finished my finals just as the month was ending. I haven't included anything I read for school here, so this looks a little bare bones.

Reading

I felt like I didn't do much reading outside of my school work, but here's a few things I finished.

Two articles on pop music, this one on fallout boy and new music and this one on Harry Styles and queerbaiting. They were both linked by wren, I've been thinking of the first one re: new music and the second whenever Harry Styles appears on my tl (which is surprisingly often?). Both of them made me think!

This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar, Max Gladstone ★★★☆☆ (3.5)

What if we were two enemy time travelers working for warring interests, and also fell in love via letters?

The idea of this novella (time travel! epistolary! spies!) is really wonderful. The execution kind of failed to hold me (I wanted them to lean into the enemies aspect of it more than they really did + a few other plot things), but I think the authors also did as much development as they could in a short space. It was a really easy read and the prose is pretty! The methods of delivering letters were also really fun! The ending is pretty predictable but they earned it.

nights taste like gold by agonies (hyb)

(M, Jeon Wonwoo/Lee Chan | Dino, Seventeen

Summary: “Sunbae,” he presses, something complicated playing out across his face so quickly that Wonwoo can’t decipher all the shades of meaning. Hopeful, that's one. “Are you — did you come here to ask me to be your partner?”

He thinks often about the before and after of things. Potential energy. Transformation. He thinks of it now.

“No,” he swallows. There’s an old poem, about a man who snared himself in his casting and didn’t know, and when he opened his mouth blackbirds poured out until there was nothing of him left. “I’m asking you for someone else.”)

In the hush he imagines he can feel the resonance of the earth and the stars, the golden feeling of casting that reverberates in his molars, up his spine. His cells are humming in time with Soonyoung's cells, his electricity is reaching out and somewhere there is Wonwoo, and they are all made of the same stardust. That's how it felt when I met you, he should have said a long time ago, but it would be stupid now.

Hyb's prose, as always, kills me. I reread this while finals were happening, diving into that little bit of consideration, thoughtfulness.

Poem-a-Day
Born. Living. Will. Die. by Camonghne Felix
Sometimes I think I’m never going to write a poem again
and then there’s a full moon.

I miss being in love but I miss
myself most when I’m gone.

from “The Laceration” by Dawn Lundy Martin
Did I tell you that it’s raining?
It’s not hard to think that it’s already night and necessary,
how any green is a wild form, and lastly, I don’t want to
inspire devotion if it means the I becomes separated from the world.

Rememory by Roya Marsh

The Year Before I Left For Mars by Margaret Rhee

A Love Note by Adeeba Shahid Talukder
The sunset was at its last
embers. The dark was stealing
the blue light from our room.

I was falling into you.

Iyáaní (Spirit, Breath, Life) by Sara Marie Ortiz

Resist by Brandy Nālani McDougall

I Was a Good Wife by Vanessa Angélica Villarreal
and an even better
wolf,

Misc

I actually listened to quite a few podcasts this month while jogging, here was one of my favorite episodes: 99% Invisible: Hanko. I like 99% Invisible as a podcast generally, and it was really interesting to hear more about Hanko, something I had only heard about before in passing from my mother.
