May. 2nd, 2022 07:58 pmFeaturing a Hanif Abdurraqib interview, Hunter x Hunter, Sonic 2, and MCR!
(Doing my thesis rn and so most everything is on hold or being used for procrastination)
Sonic 2 ★★★☆☆
It was fun??? Knuckles was my favorite character. (I have not seen Sonic 1 lol).
I started a lot of books this month but haven't finished any of them yet!
Hunter x Hunter ep. 24 - 148
Aaaaaaand here is why there is literally nothing else in any of these categories. I have watched So Much Hunter x Hunter this month. Anime renaissance spring…
I really enjoy hxh's spirit! And also Killua. Overall a really fun show even if the Chimera Ant arc was the worst story arc I've sat through in forever. 3/5 needed more Killua. I was more satisfied by the ending than I thought I'd be! It definitely felt like they needed to wrap it up really quick; I know the manga kept going after this. Definitely worth it though overall!
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. ep 1-9
This is what I started for background entertainment when cooking/etc after finishing hxh. It's funny, I'm enjoying it!
Bridgerton s1
I watched like two episodes of this at a friend's insistence. Idk if I'll continue it though.
Interweaving with Hanif Abdurraqib: “To know that I cannot move the world on my own means that I can’t be silent” | Interview with Hanif Abdurraqib by Nicole Roché
He talks about college and activism and being a writer and being comfortable and the news cycle. How he approaches writing is so important to read.
How to Be Critical of the Things You Love | Interview with Hanif Abdurraqib by Nawal Arjini
I think about this soooo often. I was going to write about it, but ended up just sitting with and rereading the whole piece. I really would like to read more of Hanif Aburraqib's work (something for this summer!).
Same as last month pretty much! I put together a to-read list for books though. I won't be updating that post, as the bigger one lives in a spreadsheet. That'll be useful for me to reference in the future!

Belated MCR phase! I've been listening through their discography, though obviously The Black Parade was a stand out. I started listening to Ghost9 this month, and I really like their discography!
Some highlights on my monthly playlist that didn't make it on the top tens! Recs from friends: うるうびと by RADWIMPS, TRUST MY LOVE by GOT7, Hills of Fire by Sarah Kinsley (Almay let me know she released a new song and !!!! I like it a lot).
I'm really excited for the Florence + the Machine album next month!

NA: What kinds of political responsibilities do you think fans have?
HA: I get asked all the time about the exhausting question of separating the art from the artist, which I get so bored with. At the end of the day, what people are actually asking for is absolution for the things they love: “I don’t want to let go of this thing—what are your thoughts on that?” Or, “I’ve been witness to some artist I love’s horrible interior—how can I carry on without having this moment taken from me?” Nostalgia can train a person to imagine that their brightest and most beautiful moments only have a single soundtrack.
So I think the political responsibility of the fan is to challenge that memory—challenge the desire for nostalgia and, in doing that, challenge the soundtracks that have latched onto this nostalgia. I’m challenging myself always to see how I can move outside these rigid ideas of memory, and affection for the music tied to that memory—because so often that’s what fucks people up.
I really think that the political responsibility of fans is to love themselves more than they love their icons. To love themselves even more than they love their memories, and to love the evolution of all those things in harmony: the evolution of themselves, the evolution of their memory, and the evolution of the artist—for better or worse. I think when there’s a harmonious tangent, there’s a better structure for accountability.
I think about this soooo often. I was going to write about it, but ended up just sitting with and rereading the whole piece. I really would like to read more of Hanif Aburraqib's work (something for this summer!).

Date: 2022-05-04 11:23 pm (UTC)as previously discussed, i was really shocked when you mentioned that chimera ant arc was one of the worst story arcs you've sat through because to me it IS the highlight of hxh in general (i recommend the series, with the warning that this is the best part of the whole thing) but honestly if you didn't care for the side characters, i completely get it. love hxh truly and sincerely, but that heavy narration style can really drag out when it's happening to characters you Don't care about.
MCR!! i'm so happy that you got to listen to it, i see that house of wolves and famous last words were the most played :D house of wolves is an underrated track - my favorite is probably tied between mama and dead but that entire album is just so good.

Date: 2022-05-05 03:56 am (UTC)unsolicited but some of my favorite hanif essays:
i wasn't brought here, i was born - the first essay of his that i ever read and it moved me to tears—had to walk out of my internship office to stop crying.
fleetwood mac's rumors - stunning writing on the mystique of rumors, the history of fleetwood mac, and the comfort of sameness at the end of a breakup.
saving pop punk? that's just their warm up act - profile on meet me at the altar, a newish band signed to fueled by ramen made up of WOC.
carly rae jepsen and the kingdom of desire - the way he writes about crj's music and the sweeping desire of what it feels like to crush is so lovely.
they can't kill us until they kill us is a collection of a lot of his works including the afropunk essay, but fall out boy forever is the one big standout. (tw for death by suicide, grief for that one.)

Date: 2022-05-08 05:17 am (UTC)yeah, I mentioned it before, but I loved a lot of the bits of the arc--gon and killua especially, but the arc just tried to get me invested in So Many side characters and my brain tapped out after the first dozen. loved knuckle though!!!
HOUSE OF WOLVES that songs makes me feel like a plastic bag in the wind (positive). it's been so nice to talk to people who were/are into MCR before me, not in the least because they already in the metaphorical soup. mama and dead are so good!
it's been so fun to talk to you as I listen through the fueled by ramen bands!!! thank you for your playlist too, I'm excited to listen through it when I finish the list of albums people have given me
