I'm always fond of the month of november--the period between fall and early winter, where everything slowly sheds its colors and the bones of the trees face the sky.

Some misc things at the top of this:

- The yearly love meme run by gdgdbaby is up again details here, and my link is here! It's basically a chance to leave anonymous notes to friends. Link me yours if you're participating this year <3
- If you have spotify and got your wrapped playlist this year, I would love to listen to it!!! (You'll have to make a copy of it and link from that, if you just try to link the playlist itself, spotify automatically directs anyone else to their own version of top 101 songs, instead of yours.)

Movies

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and 5 (2011, 2017)
The end of my pirates watch!!! Me and my friend both agreed that 3 was the best, 4 was the worst, and we were sick of Jack Sparrow by movie 5.

Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
They're all so stupid and so smart I love them immensely 5/5 stars.

Actual thoughts: this is a really good sequel to the original! It feels very similar in tone and plot, and I liked how they continued to progress the characters.

Knives Out (2019)
Lol okay so I rewatched this in prep before Glass Onion (the semi-sequel) comes out, and it was still fun! Campy murder mystery, it's just, everything I could want out of a murder mystery, the layers are so fun.

NCT DREAM THE MOVIE : In A DREAM (2022)
I went and saw the dreamies movie while it was in theaters!!! It was very cute. Very much "NCT DREAM 101" for anyone who didn't know them.

It wasn't really a documentary OR a concert video; the concert video footage is spliced out of order between short interviews. I really wanted more of how they prepared for the concert, I think an in depth behind the scenes of that would be so interesting, but what they did show was still cool. The little interviews were really cute!!!

I kept thinking about how they mixed the concert sound throughout--because I think they really did a good job of making the concert sound like you were at the concert, especially paired with the audio capacity of the speakers at the theater. Also cool: when they showed the audience from the stage's perspective. I think it really hammered home how big the stadium they were performing in was.

Books

Babel by R F Kuang
  • why I read it: Book club with friends!

  • thoughts: I love the way Kuang did language magic in this book! I feel like I don't have a lot of thoughts to share here because I talked about most of them with Karina, but I'd recommend this book.

The World We Make by N. K. Jemisin
  • why I read it: This is the sequel to "The City We Became," and I was super pumped to read it because I loved the original one.

  • thoughts: One of these characters caters directly to me. I loved this book!!!!

To quote what I sent a friend: "it has everything I could want: people becoming cities and having complicated feelings about it; really interrogating "what does it mean when you become a weapon" (RELATEDLY: I LOVE THAT CHARACTER the development really hits every note I could want (spoilers who the character is but you Will Know if you read)); other cities; a diverse and complicated cast of characters that feels really fleshed out; an interesting conflict

big twewy vibes, big a madness of angels vibes"

I'm not here to give you super objective thoughts about this one, I really love a lot of the tropes Jemisin was using, and was delighted by so much of this book. I hear this duology was supposed to be a trilogy, so that might explain why the ending feels rushed to some people. I wasn't really bothered by it. I would have loved another book in this series though.

Also, brief thought, click spoilers for both Babel and The World We Make I thought there were interesting parallels between Aislyn and Letty's roles in their respective stories, and how Kuang and Jemisin used them to represent the harm sticking to the "status quo" does. Well placed thoughts on white fragility.

The Sentient Lesbian Em Dash — My Favorite Punctuation Mark — Gets Me Off by Chuck Tingle
  • why I read it: Listen, I've seen Chuck Tingle books out so many places and I've always been curious to know how good they are/how seriously he's taking them?? (Edit: this is a short story, not a book.)

  • thoughts: Lollllll.

Okay so the answer is, it's pretty campy, but not immediately enough to put it down. I wouldn't buy another but it was worth like 3 USD to see what's up. Basically if you've read bad porn on ao3 you've read this. (Ex./ We arrive at the living em dash’s apartment and push through the door without hesitation, then immediately succumb to the lust the courses through us.)

I think it was cute and he doesn't seem to treat the story like the genre is a joke. Like, obviously the story itself is kind of ridiculous, but you get the feeling that he's enjoying writing it, in a charming way.

TV

Drink Masters
This is a knock-out style cooking tournament that's about mixing drinks. It's about the same as any cooking competition. I watched a lot of it while I was painting something I think? I'm going to try and finish it this month.

I don't drink a lot, so it's been especially funny to watch from that angle. Like: I have no idea what that drink/alcohol will taste like, but go on, describe it to me!

7 Days Out
Okay I think this is my favorite thing I watched all month, it catered directly to my ID.

This is basically a behind the scene look at a bunch of high pressure events, counting down what they're doing from 7 days before the event launch. I thought it was SO fun to see the inner workings of the things they covered (they did a bunch of different varieties, such as Westminster Dog Show, Chanel's Haute Couture fashion show, and the League of Legends championship, etc).

I enjoyed this so much, it's the type of content I'm always interested in.

(Note: I think it was filmed in 2018 but only released now.)

Vincenzo
Once more watching some of this with Nikita! If we age 300 lifetimes watching it, that's okay. (Aka, the show's pacing is very slow. If I wasn't watching this with Kita I'd just read some episode summaries of the last few episodes and call it a day, but the entertainment of talking about it with her is so worth it.)

MISC

My Chemical Fancast: ep 47, feat. Cassie Whitt and Lee Jennings
My Chemical Fancast did an episode to wrap up the recent tour! I thought it was fun, and I enjoyed listening to it. Lee Jennings talks so much, I wanted to shake him a little because I wanted to hear Whitt and the hosts' thoughts not just his, but overall they seemed like they were having a fun time! I went and listened to some of Jennings' band's music afterward (he fronts The Funeral Portrait and it was fun! I didn't realize he fronted the band until after I finished listening to the episode lol and so I was like "why are they talking so much about this random band" while the interview was going.)

Fic Clique Ep 63: Ye Olde Witch of the Past
Been listening to some fic clique (podcast that's like if book clubs were about fic) episodes while I work, and this one was fun. I like the cozy feel of them, and this episode in particular made me laugh. Maybe not the BEST choice I've ever made to listen to the spooky episode while alone in the archive stacks but that one's on me.

Dimension 20: Unsleeping City
I finished Dimension 20: A Court of Fey and Flowers, and immediately missed listening to a dnd podcast, so I picked up another season of it! This is the one Isi recommended to me and it's been fun so far; really similar magical realism vibes to Matthew Swift, or N.K. Jemisin's NYC series.

I'm only like one episode in, but I know I'm going to continue to have fun with it.

[2022 MAMA] Stray Kids - Venom + MANIAC
The MAMAs were recently!!! Really enjoyed seeing skz perform. Hyunjin in particular, wow! I think this fancam really captures his dancing in a way the camera work from the awards side doesn't. (Been thinking about this recently actually, the way that awards shows and music shows do camera work vs. say, Studio Choom's cameras. I realize there's a difference in the amount of time each are allowed to use, but I've noticed I usually like watching wider shots rather than the POV style stuff I've seen more of recently.)

'The Cave Tried To Keep Us': The First-Ever Dive Inside An Iceberg
CAVE DIVING IS ALREADY SO MUCH… And then someone was like: okay but what if in an iceberg???

This is Such an article. Every time you think "okay so you're going home after that right??" they're like "and then we went back into the iceberg". No!!!!

In Progress

Because, Internet (I'm SO close to finishing this, only like an hour left in the audio book.)
Sellout by Dan Ozzi (Again, SO close to finishing this.)

I'd like to start Human Acts and Minor Feelings this month but who knows what will happen, I've given up trying to predict what I'll be able to finish.

Vestiges by Ángel García
I really liked the commentary that came with this one: “For years I’ve been tracing my lineage, the historical record of where and who my family comes from. While the research has been a process of recovery, through anecdotes and occasional artifacts, I’ve come to the realization that I’m too late. There are wide and deep swaths of what I do not and never will know concerning the ancestors whose pasts I am trying to write through. Despite the loneliness this causes, the profound sense of loss, this poem offers a critique that hinges on my speaker’s selfishness. It asks, who am I to write through their lives?”

SCROBBLES: 3,054

SCROBBLES PER DAY: 98

Once again it is hot bitch Pinkshift fall!!! Excitement also brought to you from seeing them in concert this month, they were INCREDIBLE.

I went through something listening to Hazy Shade of Winter as you do. Something about the lyrics "Hang on to your hopes, my friend / That's an easy thing to say / But if your hopes should pass away / Simply pretend that you can build them again" really hit me.

Also listened to a lot of Miyavi. Also: it is always time for Vienna Teng 😌

The LS Dunes album was really fun, their album came out this month! Especially in Permanent Rebellion I love the color of the Green's vocals paired with the glittery guitar tones they have, especially when the screaming kicks in later. They're so good at using the right timbre for their song!! Anthony Green what a voice.

Weyes Blood also released an album--I haven't listened to it all the way through, but I like the sound of it so far.
