It's been a busy few months so this is quite late! Here was July!
Royal Warriors (1985) ★★★☆☆
The Michelle Yeoh watch continues!! This is a movie primarily concerned with revenge--Michelle Yeoh teams up with another cop to stop a plane hijacking and the consequences spiral from there. Not the best thing she's ever been in.
Final Recipe (2013) ★★★★☆
This is in all ways but physical a cooking anime live action adaptation. I think it's a really fun time! Don't think too hard about the plot, but I like the themes of communicating through cooking. Michelle Yeoh stars as a conflicted cooking show judge side character.
Twilight (2008) ★★☆☆☆
I watched this with my friends because I'd never seen it and I was tired of not having done so. Really so funny but only because we were all together and could laugh at it.
The Soong Sisters (1997) ★★☆☆☆
Michelle Yeoh stars as a member of the Soong family in a movie based on the real life Soong sisters. I think I needed to know more history to really appreciate it. Also there's a scene of blackface which really put me off. I wouldn't recommend this one.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021) ★★★★☆
I watched this because I heard you needed to see it before S2 of the anime? It was great, I liked it a lot! Very interested to see how they'll resolve some of those plot points later.
Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) ★★★★★
One of my friends said he hadn't seen it so I made him watch it and had a good time!!! Once again I am peeled like a fruit by the scene in the parking lot.
Barbie (2023) ★★★★☆
My dad wanted to see this lol so I saw it with him. It was good! I think the critique of Barbie (™) as a product of Mattel kind of fell flat, as did the feminism metaphor (I think they muddied their own waters with how they did the Ken thing) but the ending scene with Ken was good, and I think it had some interesting things to say about girlhood. Would have been interested in seeing more of the tween daughter. The music was quite good! This seems harsh but like, I did enjoy it while I watched it.
Winter Recipes from the Collective by Louise Glück
Nirvana in Fire 2: The Wind Blows in Changlin
Finished my rewatch of NiF 2 with friends! It's definitely a different show from NiF 1 but I like it a lot, and there's allegedly a NiF 3 coming out sometime so I'm very excited for that.
Notre Dame de Paris
My friend is a fan of this musical and so we watched the pro-shot! It was quite good with the company especially. It's a visually stunning musical and I loved the execution. Also the music is great. The plot does get a little opaque at times though. It doesn't help that it's all in French.
Honestly not sure what I had in progress in July anymore, haha.

Books
Winter Recipes from the Collective by Louise Glück
- why I read it: I generally like Louise Glück's work a lot, and so I picked this up from the library.
- thoughts: This was really gorgeous! Generally focused on themes of loss, age, travel, and survival. I think it contained many invitations into its world, which is really all I can ever ask from a book of poetry. While it's not a book I'd necessarily recommend as someone's first book of poetry, I think it's really good and I recommend it!
Ah, he says, you are dreaming again
And I say then I'm glad I dream
the fire is still alive
