april scrapbook
May. 10th, 2021 05:04 pmApril seemed to go so fast… I forgot to note what I was reading this month so here’s some incomplete thoughts. This is significantly more organized than march's, but I'm not sure which format I prefer more, separating these thoughts out makes them easier to browse but feels more rigid.
Chogwa
This is a quarterly e-zine for english translations of korean poetry! The twist is that all the translators work on one poem per issue, highlighting the variety of ways a single poem can be translated. I thought it was really cool! Link
Nightingale
It’s a collection of poems by Paisley Rekdal I had to read for a class. I still think about the first poem a lot.
Impossible Owls
9/10 - A collection of essays by Brian Phillips! I don’t know if I’m ever going to finish the essays at the end of this book, but I love the first two essays in this.
Developing and Maintaining Practical Archives
6/10 - It’s a textbook I’ve had to reference a lot this quarter. Normally I wouldn’t include it in a round up like this but I’ve had to reference it so much?? It’s relatively clear and concise.
Highlights from Poem-a-day
Let Me Begin Again by Major Jackson
Let me run
at break-neck speeds toward sceneries
of doubt. I have no more dress rehearsals
to attend. Look closer: I am licking my lips.
One More Love Poem by Dunya Mikhail
When Love by Alicia Ostriker
After Graduate School by Valencia Robin
Rock Paper Scissors by Arthur Sze
House Empty Speaks a Loud Truth, 2018 by Iris Jamahl Dunkle
Nothing Wants to Suffer by Danusha Laméris
The coyote in its den. The puma stalking its prey.
These, too, want ease and a tender animal in the mouth
to take their hunger.
The Other Side of Nowhere by André Naffis-Sahely
Memory is Blood Soluble by Brian Sneeden
Which summons a cloud of bees from the stone, or conceals your shape behind a flame. It is every guitar I have found in the gutter. Every name on the edge of being gone.
I Never Wanted to Die by Dorianne Laux
In her mostly white town, an hour from Rocky Mountain National Park, a black poet considers centuries of protests against racialized violence by Camille T. Dungy
Every year,
snow erases
the highest road.
We must start near
the bottom and
plow toward each
other again.
My Father’s Accent by Kaveh Akbar
But even that’s a lie.
Just black grass, blue snow.
I can’t write this
without trying to make it
beautiful. Submission, resistance, surrender.
Here’s my playlist for last month (link). The amount of tbz on this playlist is revealing.
Honestly, I’ve been listening to this piano album from Hiromi a lot, just for background noise. It’s really nice!
Some vibes I also listened to to get through my required readings this month (link).
Kingdom
Who doesn’t know about kingdom… I got really tired of the super serious dramatic competition style of editing by episode four-ish, but the field day episode was healing!!
Word of Honor
I’m up to episode nine here. I’ll be honest I have zero clue what the plot is actually doing, but I love the main characters.
The Handmaiden (2016)
For a movie with a premise that could have been cool, I sure did feel wildly uncomfortable watching it! (Accidentally watched the extended ver, which probably made it worse.)
Shadow and Bone
I saw the first two episodes of this… Mixed reviews. It’s not super compelling, but Inej <3
F1
I’ve been kinda keeping up with F1? The races keep happening at like 6am 💔 I want Yuki to do well though !!!! (My sleep schedule has been leaning towards being up at 7am so I've caught far more of these races than I thought I would.)
I don’t feel like I read a lot of new stuff last month, but here were a few highlights! If you want tbz recs (there is a theme to april), feel free to ask. No commentary on them, but I loved them each in a different way <3
down for your love by pulses
(T, Choi Soobin/Ji Changmin | Q, The Boyz & TXT
When you are twenty years old and recording your very first album, there are things you learn to live with, things you have to carry.
Soobin had taught himself to bear that weight, but even the sturdiest ship has its cracks. A wave high enough will still crash onto the decks, seep through the splinters and overcome.
Or: Changmin is kind and handsome, and Soobin is pretty sure he doesn't know what he's doing.)
Forever Favourite by minbins
(E, Bae Joonyoung | Jacob/Moon Hyungseo | Kevin, The Boyz
"You know how I’ll love you the most?"
Jacob laughs. He always finds Kevin funnier than he’ll admit to, and this seems to be no exception. "I think I can hazard a guess.")
a riot of feelings in the clamouring heat by bysine
(T, Kang Younghyun | Young K/Kim Wonpil, Day6
All Wonpil knew was that he had already been far gone by the time Younghyun had sauntered up to him at the staff cafeteria one day at lunch, his green, blue and yellow Amazon Express aloha shirt tucked into his khaki uniform trousers, furry animal headband still clamped on top of his safari hat.

A side effect of watching Kingdom meant that I watched the Road to Kingdom performances, which was the reason I fell into a rabbit hole and watched what feels like 40 hours of their videos. I don’t know either!! Here are a few of my favorite videos.

"I don’t doubt it," Soobin says, drawing himself up. The thing is, he remembers watching their Heroine performance for the first time, lying down on his bottom bunk, phone tucked right in front of his face. How he’d felt strangely bereft by it. That smooth unraveling of Changmin’s dance line; the expressiveness held in the throat of every beat.

Jacob: come get these hugs baybee
He’s posing for the camera with one arm thrown wide, smiling with his eyes scrunched shut. Kevin remembers for a moment why people call his best friend an angel, and then Jacob earns himself the death route once more.
Jacob: my bad, come get these hugs, *"""""sexy""""""

And finally: Kang Younghyun after a shift, when he'd just changed back into his black t-shirt and cargo shorts, hair still a funny shape from a day of having a safari hat and fox ear headband jammed on top of his head, walking slowly because his feet hurt. No amount of pre- and mid-shift sports dextrose could possibly counter the exertions of the day, and yet, impossibly, he always seemed to have one last smile stored up: a quiet, private one that always made Wonpil feel like he'd just been told a wonderful secret.
