Apr. 9th, 2023 10:06 pmhappy april to you all, here's to more rain, may the month bring you joy!
I continue to work through movies Michelle Yeoh acted in with the help of some friends!
The Children of Huang Shi (2008) ★★★★☆
This is a war movie and while it suffers from the same general tropes that plague this sort of concept, I think it's helped by the fact it's based on a true story. Really solid acting and I was invested in the kids a lot by the end. (cws for war/war crimes, gun violence, on screen drug use, and suicide)
Hidden Blade (2023) ★★★★★
This was not a Michelle Yeoh movie, but it had Wang Yibo and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who were killer (pun half intended). I ended up seeing this alone in the theater, which was cool. I need to read more about Chinese history to really understand what the nuances of the film were getting at, but I enjoyed it a lot in general! The mentorship-revenge-hate-understanding plot goes so hard. (cws for war/war crimes, violence, off screen rape, off screen torture, and on screen death/cruelty)
Top Fighter 2 (1996) ★★★☆☆
This is a documentary that came out in 1996 that talked about female stunt actresses and Michelle Yeoh was in it? It was fun but mostly surface level and I kind of tuned out the last half of it.
Reign of Assassins (2010) ★★★☆☆
The most poorly paced het romance BUT you do get star crossed assassins at the end, so was it worth it? Debatably.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)★☆☆☆☆
Just bad…… I didn't like most of the characters, the plot was thin as onion skin, and the emotional beats didn't land. It tastes terrible but I'll eat this for you Michelle.
Squire by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh (2022)
Next In Fashion (Season 2 - 2023)
This is the next season of Next In Fashion! I liked the last one, and this one is also really fun. I'm only halfway through but I'm putting it in March because I'm probably not going to have any different thoughts about it later. I really liked all the contestants and the camaraderie they had. Still not a huge fan of the time limits of the show but that's kind of part and parcel of the show's format.
Kinda short on things this month, mostly because I spent the majority of it super busy, and sewing for a convention! What I did listen to was Fantasy High, which is season 1 of Dimension 20's Dungeons and Dragons live action role playing game. I thought the season was generally a little rougher than later seasons, but I started it because I really wanted to get some of the jokes the cast was making.
Ultimately it hits its stride around episode 5 or 6, and I really enjoyed all the player characters. Such a fun team of people. I had watched A Crown of Candy before, which ripped my heart out, so I already had a lot of fondness for them.
This isn't what I'd recommend for anyone's first season of d20 they watch, but I really enjoyed it.
I also watched a lot of Game Changer which is a game show available via Dropout! I think it's so fun, and I enjoyed watching it while doing some data entry.
I'm in the middle of quite a few books atm! (As I am always, finishing them is a different matter…) Specifically, I'm being annoyed while reading Vampire Weekend by Mike Chen, and having a better time continuing Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Lee.
As always, these are drawn from the poem-a-day poems, sent via poets.org! You too can get a poem in your inbox every day! I just pick my favorites from the month and link them here.

the strongest poem out of this bunch this month I think
I listened to SO much Taemin this month. He's coming back!!! Also listened to the new Janelle Monae song, that was great. I saw Meet Me @ the Altar this month, they were SO good. Wow!!! I didn't realize how much I missed live shows until I saw them.

Books
Squire by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh (2022)
- why I read it: I've vaguely followed Sara Alfageeh's art for a while, and I noticed she published a graphic novel a while ago, and found it at the library!
- thoughts: This was so fun! It's pretty short and sweet, but I really like books about honor and knighthood and self identity, and this also had really fun characters and art. It's not a surprise, any of it really, but there's a lot of satisfaction in a story well told.
